2005 - Keller Veterans Memorial Park

Photo of Keller Veterans Memorial ParkKeller Rotary, in celebration of Rotary International's Centennial Year of 2005, and in conjunction with the City of Keller, developed the Keller Veterans Memorial Park. The park is intended to honor Keller area residents who actively served in the armed forces. .

The Keller Rotary Club coordinated with the city to procure the site of the Keller Veterans Memorial Park at the intersection of Main Street (US 377) and Keller Parkway (FM 1709). The club obtained services of an architect to design the park and then led the effort to raise the money to get it done.
The striking design incorporates six-foot tall standing marble pillars that are engraved with the names of every man or woman they could locate who entered the armed forces while a resident of the Keller area. The beautiful park setting includes benches, parking, landscaping, and a walkway that features engrave bricks that Rotarians sold as part of the fundraising effort. The memorial park was dedicated in the spring of 2006.

2006 - Johnson Road Park

When the playground @  "Imagination Station" located at Johnson Road Park fell into disrepair and became unsafe, the Keller Rotary club stepped in to head the rebuilding project.  The playground was re-built using donations from corporate citizens and the hard work of volunteers from throughout the community, including the Keller Rotary Club, Lions Club, Greater Keller Women's Club, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and neighborhood residents who simply wanted to lend a hand.

2008 – Present   Mount Gilead Cemetery Restoration Project

In 2007, Keller Rotary Club joined local volunteers and committed to help preserve and maintain the Historic Mt. Gilead Cemetery in North Keller.  Located at 1351 Bancroft Road, the cemetery dates back as far as 1854.  Many of Keller’s pioneer families are buried there as well as war veterans of that era from the Mexico Revolution and Civil War to more recent conflicts such as the Korean War.  The cemetery has been maintained by numerous volunteers throughout the years but recently fell into disrepair.  Keller Rotary and the Mt. Gilead Cemetery Association are committed to enhancing the cemetery’s beauty and preserving its history for Keller’s future generations.

In 2009, the Keller Rotary Club completed construction of a stone and wrought iron entrance.  The iron archway was a project of the 2009 Fort Stockton High School welding class.  The stone was donated by local businessman Buddy Roberts of Southwest Brick and Fireplace.

In 2010 completed more wrought iron fencing as well as improvements to the water drainage.  Keller Rotary continues to provide basic and routine maintenance to the grounds, tree lines & property to preserve the cemetery and make it accessible and enjoyable to the general public.

Several local Eagle Scouts have completed service projects as part of their Eagle requirements:

2009 – Dustin Wilde – install stone markers for unmarked gravesites discovered during a radar ground scan

2010 – Zach Clark – constructed a concrete bridge over the creek, replacing a temporary wooden bridge

2010 – Christopher Stroub-tahmassi – Landscaping front entrance and installing a rock walkway

2011 – Alex Alvarenga – replaced 200’ of rusted netwire fence with black nylon coated cyclone

2012 – Josh Clark – plans to build memorial garden & reflection area

2010 – Bear Creek Park Dedication Marker

A project completed in 2010 with cooperation from the City Parks Dept, Keller Rotary Club & several local businesses, replaced a modest memorial in an obscure section of the park with this handsomely designed monument.

The original monument recognized the late George “Skeet” Richardson a former State Representative, longtime Keller resident and former city mayor for his idea to create a city park while he was serving as a Tarrant County Commissioner. It also recognizes Glen and Gordon Yates for donating the original 28 acres to the city in 1969 to begin the project.  The Rotary Foundation of Keller provided the balance of the funding required to complete the project which had many local business donate material, time & labor to the project.  They are recognized on a bronze plaque at the monument.
